چکیده

central tenet of lunar science is that the Moon was surrounded by a huge ocean of magma when it formed. Originally thought to be a few hundred kilometers deep, lunar scientists now think that the entire Moon was initially molten. Numerous geochemical models have been constructed for the crystallization of the magma ocean. All the calculations use computer programs based on experimental data, but these necessitate some simplifications. Stephen Elardo, David Draper, and Charles Shearer (all at the University of New Mexico, though Draper has moved to the Johnson Space Center) are tackling the problem differently by doing a series of high-temperature experiments at different pressures and two different starting compositions to improve our understanding of how the magma ocean crystallized.

Viscosity and Structure of a Late Lunar Magma Ocean Liquid: Implications for the Purity of Ferroan Anorthosites and the Dynamics of a Crystallizing Magma Ocean

The current paradigm argues the Moon formed after a giant impact that produced a deep lunar magma ocean (LMO). After a period of turbulent convection, the LMO experienced fractional crystallization, causing the initially peridotitic liquid to evolve to a plagioclase-saturated ferrobasalt. The lunar crust, much of which comprises 93-98% pure anorthosite [1,2], formed by flotation of positively b...

Feasibility of a magma ocean dynamo on Mars

Crustal magnetization of rocks in regions of Mars surface testifies to an era of dynamo activity. I examine the possibility that the dynamo that operated then, in the first 400–600 Ma after Mars formed, was powered by a crystallizing subsurface magma ocean. Of the ways that a magma ocean dynamo could operate, on Mars only turbulent and magnetostrophic dynamos seem feasible; geostrophic dynamos ...

PSRD: Age Rules

The ages of rocks from the lunar highlands vary widely, even for a single rock sample. This makes it difficult to quantitatively test ideas for early lunar differentiation and formation of the crust. Lars Borg and Amy Gaffney (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory), and Charles Shearer (University of New Mexico) have devised a set of guidelines to apply to geochronological data that leads to a...

Experimental Constraints on Composition of Lunar Magma Ocean from Physical Properties of Magma

Introduction: It has been widely accepted that the lunar anorthosite crust formed by floatation of anorthite in the magma ocean at the time of a giant impact of the Earth-Moon system formation. The positive Eu-anomaly in lunar anothosites and the absence of mafic components in the lunar crust that contain complementary negative Eu-anomalies can also be the evidence of formation of the anorthosi...

Tidal dissipation in the lunar magma ocean and its effect on the early evolution of the Earth-Moon system

The present-day inclination of the Moon reflects the entire history of its thermal and orbital evolution. The Moon likely possessed a global magma ocean following the Moon-forming impact. In this work, we develop a coupled thermal-orbital evolution model that takes into account obliquity tidal heating in the lunar magma ocean. Dissipation in the magma ocean is so effective that it results in ra...
